Journalist Hughes Belin investigates the prospects of the Energy Union strategy and its governance structure, for viEUws.eu, ahead of the European Commission’s official presentation on 25 February.
The initial concept of the Energy Union is based on five key dimensions:
1. Supply Security
2. Internal Market
3. Energy Efficiency
4. Decarbonisation
5. Research & Innovation
However, the governance system of the Energy Union remains unresolved. It is a quantum leap for EU integration, with the Member States working together in solidarity towards an energy transition to a low-carbon economy. But there are several barriers to overcome, which make the governance challenge crucial for the success or the failure of the Energy Union.
Featuring statements by Maroš Šefčovič, Vice President for Energy Union, Jean-Arnold Vinois, Adviser on Energy Policy at the Notre Europe-Jacques Delors Institute and a co-author of a report on the Energy Union, and André Merlin, President of Medgrid and former President of CIGRE (International Council on Large Electric Systems).
